SecurityUndo and verifying a restore

Undo and verifying a restore

How Respira snapshots every change, how long snapshots are kept, how to undo one change or a whole session, and how to check that a restore really put the page back.

Undo and verifying a restore

Respira takes a snapshot of a page or post before every change it makes. Any change is one restore away.

What a snapshot holds

Each snapshot records the content, the page builder data and the protected settings of that post, along with three fingerprints:

  • Builder data fingerprint: the page builder's own stored layout
  • Rendered fingerprint: the page as visitors see it
  • Settings fingerprint: the protected page settings Respira restores with it

Snapshots are kept for 90 days by default. Pinned snapshots are kept until you unpin them.

Undo one change

Ask your assistant to run respira_restore_snapshot, or restore it from Respira in wp-admin. Before restoring, Respira takes one more snapshot of the page as it is now, so the restore itself can be undone.

Undo a whole session

Changes made in one working session are grouped. respira_restore_session puts every page touched in that session back together, so a set of related edits is never half undone.

Verify that a restore matched

A restore returns two snapshots: the page just before the restore, and the page just after it. To prove the page is back where it was, compare the after-restore snapshot with the snapshot you restored:

  1. Ask your assistant to run respira_diff_snapshots with the snapshot you restored and the after-restore snapshot.
  2. The result compares the three fingerprints and reports whether anything still differs.

If the builder data, rendered and settings fingerprints all match, the page is back exactly as it was in that snapshot. If one still differs, the result says which.

Respira refuses a restore that provably cannot change the page, for example a snapshot that recorded no builder content while the page keeps its content in a page builder. You get a clear refusal instead of a success that changed nothing.
